After finishing eighth in the Premier League, Manchester United’s only hope of European football rested on winning the FA Cup which provides an automatic Europa League spot the following season.
That spot isn’t yet locked in completely for the Red Devils, however, due to UEFA regulations that need to be worked through.
Manchester United’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his company Ineos also own French club Nice, who have also qualified for the Europa League next season after finishing fifth in Ligue 1.
UEFA rules dictates that no organisation can have influence over more than one club in the same competition putting United’s involvement next season under scrutiny.
The Telegraph reports that Ineos have until Monday to satisfy UEFA requirements.
If no solution is found, the Red Devils would be relegated to the Conference League because Erik ten Hag’s side finished lower in their league than Nice.
Ineos have confirmed they are in talks with UEFA and are confident they can find a way forward before the deadline.
UEFA’s rules forced Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise to alter its ownership structure last season after Brighton also qualified for the Europa League with both teams connected to Tony Bloom.
While Aston Villa and Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes found themselves in a similar situation in the Europa Conference League.
Girona and Manchester City are facing similar scrutiny over their Champions League involvement next season as both clubs are part of the City Football Group (CFG).
In this case, it would be Girona that could find themselves relegated to the Europa League if CFG aren’t able to satisfy UEFA requirements. xv / OPTUSPORT
